Challenge

Surgical interventions generally require a hospital stay of four to six days and over a month of recovery, and may also increase the costs of care significantly and result in loss of productivity for the patient.

Some of these conditions can be treated through endoscopic procedures rather than surgery. However, patients with di cult anatomy, large polyps on folds, or flexures in the cecum, present challenges that may be difficult to overcome.

Factors like:

  • Stability of the endoscope and colon segment can always be a challenge.
  • Poor visualization can inhibit progress during the procedure.
  • These and other challenges can result in long, arduous procedures and inadequate resections.
Impact

A randomized prospective study evaluates the economic efficiency of the endoluminal double-balloon platform DiLumen for colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)

Presented at UEG Week 2020 and ACG 2020 by Dr. S. Kantsevoy, Director of Therapeutic Endoscopy, Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore, USA

The results at a glance:

  • 49% less time spent on ESD
  • 37% less time required for the entire procedure
  • En bloc resection in 97% vs. 86% in the comparison group

Design Thinking in Elementary Education

Working with my wife who is an elementary school teacher, I’ve been able to help teach 3rd and 4th grade Students at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School the Design thinking process.  In addition, Students were taught to design and draw houses in art class.  They were then taught in technology class how to use Google Sketch up to create those designs in 3 dimensions.  the CAD was then 3d printed, and brought back into art class to paint and add solar panels.  The class then collaborated with a Civil Engineer to create a neighborhood together.

MIT Mentor

Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in over a dozen design and product development courses at MIT.  I’ve been lucky enough to work with some talented engineers that have been through these programs. Through guest lectures, course planning, mentoring student engineering teams, and giving design critiques, I am always excited to give back to them.

SML Tenor Sax Restoration

In the 40’s and 50’s, a small group of artisans broke off from Selmer, the top saxophone manufacturer in the world. They created some of the best saxophones ever made, but only for a short time. I was lucky enough to get my hands one of them in rather rough condition, and have been restoring it over the years.

Design Conference

In April 2015 I had the honor of organizing and hosting the IDSA North East District Conference as district Vice President. The conference focus was on cross discipline Collaboration.

Many design conferences consist mainly of designers talking to designers about design. But that doesn’t really represent what we do—not in the real world. Design is a critical component of almost every solution, but it is not the only part. Complex problems require expertise in engineering, business, strategy, environment, marketing and research. Designers may choose to tackle these problems themselves, or opt to work with specialists. The question is when should you be a jack-of-all-trades, and when should you collaborate? During the conference, we heard from both experts in related industries, as well as from designers who have taken on the related roles themselves. We learned from real world experiences, successes and failures, around designers collaborating with other disciplines. We will gain insight on how to develop tangential value and, most importantly, how to develop best practices through cross-collaboration.
