Challenge

“Drugs don’t work in patients who don’t take them”
– C. Everett Koop, MD Surgeon General
Every 90 minutes a patient dies because of an accidental overdose or missed prescription
1 in 3 prescriptions are never filled

Impact

System and Business Case Design resulting in estimated 2.1% adherence lift across 13 million patients, Resulting in over 200,000 lives saved per year with a steady state annual $1.2M ROI.

Research

Patients, Providers, and Pharmacists all have unique challenges with connected Platforms

  • Interviews with pharmacists provided an in depth understanding of current pharmacy workflow, how an adherence aid would best fit into it, and what value would a solution provide them and their patients.

  • Interviewing  providers helped the team to better comprehend their role in patient adherence, the relationship they have with their patients,  barriers they need to overcome, and what value they see in access to adherence information.

  • Patients were asked a number of questions in regards to their management of prescription medication. This provided insight into to patient behaviors, point of views on adherence tracking, and appropriate ways to embody an effective adherence solution.

Current adherence measures are not effective & real-time solutions are needed

  • Current measures of adherence (Medication Possession Ratio and Proportion of Days Covered) essentially use historical patient refill data as a measure of adherence.
  • This data is available months after primary non-conformance or non-persistence making the opportunity to get patient back on their regimen very difficult.
  • Performing a competitive analysis of existing hardware, IP, workflows, business models and technology ecosystems assisted the team by providing a contextual understanding of the larger adherence market.

  • Nearly 60% of reasons for non-adherence are inked to patient behavior and perception, a real time connected solution and targeted intervention can alleviate these factors.

The impact of current solutions is low & can be explained by four key vectors

1) Adoption

Patients have a difficult time or refuse to adjust their current behavior
.

2) Workflow

Solutions require radical changes to proven and sensitive workflows and care models

3) Targeting

Solutions fail to target specific demographics and try to impact everyone or a single user

4) Value

The ROI as it relates to the specific value and cost drivers are not well understood

Solution

A CUSTOM SOLUTION will MORE EFFECTIVELY lift ADHERENCE & CREATE A DIFFERENTIATED EXPERIENCE

Provides a system (connected bottle and patient app) to help patients:

  • Take medication as prescribed (driving adherence and persistence)50% of patients who become non adherent do so in the first 2 months. Therefore, the initial Smart Caps return a 6 fold value compared to Smart Caps throughout the rest of the treatment

  • Track their medication adherence over time to build a picture of their own behavior
  • Engage with their disease management through symptom tracking and outreach

A CUSTOM SOLUTION WILL OFFER ACCESS TO CUSTOMIZABLE PATIENT LEVEL DATA WHICH WILL DRIVE HEALTH OUTCOMES

  • Allows HCP’s  to see, on-demand, patient level adherence behavior which helps to develop a day part level understanding of medication use.
  • Data collected offers more immediate and targeted interventions based on actual patterns of use vs current adherence measures.  Drives proof of therapeutic benefit for payors and providers.
  • Build a large data set to see patient’s adherence patterns and trends by country/demographic/drug etc.
  • Mapping symptoms to adherence levels is a unique proposition, supporting post market monitoring opportunities and patent protection/extension.
